DETACHED ARTISTS’ RESIDENCE KAPELLE-OP-DEN-BOS
The residence has been conceived as a floating atelier, raised above ground level. Because of its location within an agricultural area the project has been envisaged as a pavilion, with a seamless integration in its natural environment. The floor plan was designed as a diversity of functions, which position themselves around the central living space as a protective, passive shell.
At certain strategic locations this buffer is pierced to create visual links between the core and its surrounding environment. By exploring and referencing towards nature the boundary between inside – outside fades away and the dwelling becomes one with its setting. The facade has been clad with dark wooden timber, vertically aligned. By extending this cladding for the entrance door and the bedroom shuttering these become impossible to perceive when closed. Every perforation of the passive shell has been assigned a color or material to outline each area, as well as creating distinct atmospheres within the shell. Window frames are black to avoid drawing attention upon them.
