COMPACT HOUSE Humbeek
Compact houses with an abstract and neutral character frequently manifest themselves as a stronger icon in the street because of their contrast with the neighbourhood. Hence the idea to nevertheless build a house of 5.20 m x 13 m on this plot with restricted width under the denominator of typical ‘studio house’. As an architectural compromise, the living space and rooms plus circulation of the floor are kept maximally transparent as an optimisation of the comfort of living and light-heartedness. The stairwell and parent room make additional use of an optimum spatialness by leaving the roof shape visible above the ridge. The façade and the roof surface were finally clad with grey slates in a scale context as a translation to one uniform archetypical character of this design. The black window frames and black façade surfaces accentuate the whole as a distinctive variant on our design strategy.
